CADILLAC — Area writers and aspiring writers have an opportunity to discover specialized techniques for marketing their books at the sixth annual writers’ workshop sponsored by Write To Publish.
By Randy Johnston
“Plug Your Book—Successful Marketing Strategies for Authors” is the theme of this year’s event which takes place Saturday, April 16, from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Clam Lake Township Hall in Cadillac. Advance registration is not required. The admission charge is $5.00 per person, payable at the workshop.
The featured speaker is William McConnell, co-founder and owner of Bit Social Media.
In his presentation, “Go Social—Digital and Social Media Marketing for Authors,” McConnell will demonstrate how authors can showcase their works online.
In a discussion combining both theory and practical examples, McConnell will draw upon his social media expertise to outline a step-by-step program for designing, implementing and maintaining a compelling and productive online presence.
Authors will learn to identify and connect with their target audience on Facebook, author’s blog, Twitter, Goodreads and a host of other online options. McConnell will provide strategies for writing effective posts, guidelines on how often to post and demonstrate how the components work together to create visibility and cultivate followers.
He will explain what works and what does not work, point out the pitfalls of online marketing and provide numerous hands-on tools including tips sheets and checklists of dos and don’ts to help authors launch their personal digital and social media action plan.
McConnell was born and raised in the Cadillac area. He is a graduate of Cadillac Senior High School and Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. His company, Bit Social Media (www.bitsocialmedia.com), is located in Cadillac.
Also on the program is Michigan author Randy Rassoul. In her presentation, “From Author to Speaker—Presentations for Fun and Profit,” Rassoul will explain how to develop a busy schedule of author presentations at clubs, civic organizations, historical societies and other special interest groups, writers’ events and libraries to build a successful platform as author/speaker and promote book sales.
Rassoul is the author of the award-winning travel guide “I Slept in a Pineapple: A Guide to Historic Vacation Rentals in the United Kingdom and Ireland.” She was formerly a professor of French language and literature. She lived and studied in France, has traveled extensively throughout Europe and currently lives near Marion on the banks of the scenic Middle Branch River.

“The folks who come to our workshops enjoy interacting with authors who have published books and also with beginners who are just in the planning stage,” said Hoard. “Coming to the workshop is an opportunity to network with writers, get inspired about writing and pick up some new ideas.”
